Dr. Julie Johnson

Dr. Julie Johnson-Rued received her Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern California College of Optometry, a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from the University of Iowa, and a Bachelor of Visual Science degree from Southern California College of Optometry. She practices general optometry in Neenah, Wisconsin, where she lives with her husband, Dr. Tom Rued and 2 children, Cory and Nicole.  She enjoys spending her free time biking, golfing, skiing and reading. Her comprehensive eye examinations include diagnosing and treating eye diseases, fitting regular and custom specialty contact lenses, treating dry eyes, and foreign body removal.

VISION THERAPY: Dr. Johnson-Rued has an emphasis in children's eyecare.  Her specialty education was received at San Bernadino Juvenile Hall and Southern California College of Optometry. She works with children and adults who need help focusing and using their eyes together in a more efficient, comfortable, and pain-free way.  This type of therapy is most beneficial for patients who experience difficulty with reading, computer eyestrain, and school/classroom learning problems. Visual perception problems and learning related delays, which relate to the eye, are part of her therapy regimen. A comprehensive visual perceptual evaluation is followed by continuous office vision therapy which is supplemented with DAILY home vision therapy. This commitment between Dr. Johnson-Rued, the patient and their parents or caregiver (if applicable) can make a huge difference in patient's scholastic, work, and life achievements.

LOW VISION: Dr. Johnson-Rued specializes in low vision. She had extensive training at the Center for Partially Sighted of Santa Monica, California; the Las Vegas Low Vision Clinic, and The Lighthouse Low Vision Clinic of New York. She helps visually impaired patients of all ages.  Numerous magnifiers, closed circuit television magnifiers, text reading and speaking appliances, telescopes and other low vision aids incorporate new technology to help patients that have lost vision due to glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, or congenital losses.  These aids can improve their quality of life and help patients lead a more satisfying and productive life.

Dr. Thomas Rued

Dr. Rued is native to central Wisconsin.  He attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the California State University at Fullerton.  He received a Bachelor of Visual Science and his Doctor of Optometry from the Southern California College of Optometry, graduating with honors in 1983.  Dr. Rued then joined the faculty at S.C.C.O. as a lecturer and clinical instructor in the Contact Lens Department at the college where he received unique training in the fitting, design, and modification of contact lenses and diseases of the eye.

Desiring to return to Wisconsin, Dr. Rued bought a small practice in Neenah and grew it to one of the largest private full service optometry clinics in the state, along with his partner, Dr. Wesley Meyer.

Dr. Rued practices general optometry specializing in all types of contact lenses, eye disease and refractive surgical management.  He has a special interest in C.R.T. contacts that correct nearsightedness (while sleeping) without surgery and is currently the only doctor in the country who modifies these lenses in-house for a perfect fit.

Dr. Rued married his life partner, Dr. Julie Johnson, (also a S.C.C.O. graduate) in 1986 who specializes in low vision and vision therapy at the clinic.  They have two children, Cory and Nicole.  Dr. Rued enjoys fishing, golf, hunting and skiing with his family.

He and his wife, Jessica, have two young children, Alex and Nicholas.  Dr. Voss enjoys tennis, hiking, reading, and spending time with his family.  He is originally from Neenah and his parents still live here.  Dr. Voss finds it a privilege to continue to work in this community and provide optometric care to this developing area.

Dr. Wesley Meyer

Dr. Meyer has been a resident of the Fox Valley his entire life.  He received his Bachelor or Science degree from Carroll College in 1985.  He went south to Chicago, Illinois to study optometry at the Illinois College of Optometry and graduated with honors in 1989.  He joined Valley Vision Clinic in August of that year.  His practice varies from surgical co-management to contact lenses to ocular disease treatment and most optometric services in between.

When he is not golfing, fishing or hunting, he and his wife Synona can be found either at their son Mason's T-ball games or at their daughter Morgan's all-star cheerleading competitions.

What is an optometrist?

Doctors of optometry (ODs) are the primary health care professionals for the eye. Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases, injuries, and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the eye.

  • Doctors of Optometry prescribe medications, low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy, spectacle lenses, contact lenses, and perform certain surgical procedures.
  • Optometrists counsel their patients regarding surgical and non-surgical options that meet their visual needs related to their occupations, avocations, and lifestyle.
  • An optometrist has completed pre-professional undergraduate education in a college or university and four years of professional education at a college of optometry, leading to the doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree. Some optometrists complete an optional residency in a specific area of practice.
  • Optometrists are eye health care professionals state-licensed to diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the eye and visual system.
